The moment that Kate Griffin knew she was pretty good at golf was no epiphany. No bolt of lightning or the pop of a golf shot. It was quite the opposite.

“To be honest I don’t remember!” Griffin said with a laugh. “I just remember going out on the course with my dad and we were having fun. And then I just remember playing in middle school and realizing, I’m kind of good at this.”

Best decision ever for Griffin. And Coronado High School.

The junior helped her team qualify for the 4A State Tournament for the third straight year, taking the regional final to a playoff at her home course of Kissing Camels Country Club.

“I lost but it was still really cool because we had people following us and clapping just like you see on the LPGA and the PGA Tour,” Griffin said. “Then us qualifying as a team… Just those little things mean the most.”

This is the second state tournament she qualified for this spring season. She plays tennis for the Colorado Springs School where she is a full time student, so how did she wind up with the Cougars?

“CSS doesn’t have a golf team and I already played with Kelly (Hodges, her golf coach) in middle school so I was like, ‘I’ll go play for Coronado and Anna just happens to be there.

Anna?

Her twin sister who play volleyball and tennis at Coronado. They train together on the court when they aren’t in season.

It’s all about golf next week. She said she’d like to play in college at a military academy – maybe the Air Force Academy? – but she’s eyeing a state title first.

“It’s hard not to think about the other people shooting low but I’m going to focus on my game and do what I have to do.”
